Bed Bugs Keep Biting in NYC Schools

8 Feb

Bed bugs keep on biting in NYC public schools, with no signs of slowing down.  According to the latest figures from the Department of Education, city schools have reported 1,700 confirmed bed bug cases in just the first five months of the school year — a rate set to triple last year’s total of 1,019 cases.

And for those who thought the bed bug season wouldn’t extend into the Winter, think again.  Upwards of 80% of bed bug cases have been reported in November, December and January.

And where are the bed bugs in NYC schools coming from?  According to spokesperson Marge Feinberg, the latest surge in cases is a result of children bringing bed bugs into school from their homes.  “It is important to know that schools are not hospitable places for bed bugs,” Feinberg said. “They are brought into schools from the clothing.”

Last year, city officials acknowledged the recent surge in bed bug cases, and pledged to combat the crisis with $500,000 to raise public awareness.  In schools, that included a new four-step protocol for dealing with cases and increased communication between schools and parents.  But those efforts have been futile because so many homes are already infested.

With 1.1 million students and 100,000 teachers, New York’s schools are inevitably going to be a major transportation hub for bed bugs.

What can you do to help limit the spread of bed bugs in your schools?  Send your child to school with as few belongings as possible.  Have them use simple bag for their books rather than a bulky book bag that can offer many potential hiding spots for bed bugs.  Hats, scarves and jackets are sure to be potential vehicles, so handle these carefully when your child returns home from school.  Brush off their items, and place them in a secure area — preferably in an isolated hallway or garage closet.

How to kill bed bugs in your home: A list of popular bed bug insecticides

24 Jan

While many people opt to hire a professional exterminator when bed bugs are discovered in their home, there are many effective insecticides that can help you battle bed bugs on your own.  Here’s a preliminary list of bed bug insecticides to consider to help you treat bed bugs.

  • Steri-Fab Bed Bug Spray: Steri-Fab is great for use on its own, or post steam treatment.  Since it dries quickly and is non-staining, Steri-Fab Bed Bug Spray can be used on mattresses, box springs, sofas, carpeting, floorboards, dresser drawers, and more.
    • Kills bed bugs on contact
    • No dilution needed
    • Fast-drying
    • Non-staining
    • No dyes or perfumes
    • Kills bed bugs, lice, dust mites, roaches, fleas and a host of other insects
    • In addition to being an insecticide, Steri-Fab also kills mold, fungus, bacteria and mildew
    • For use on mattresses, box springs, wood, ceramic, carpeting
  • JT Eaton Kills Bed Bugs Contact Killer (Oil-Based): J.T. Eaton KILLS BED BUGS (red label) is an oil-based, ready-to-use bed bug killer with natural pyrethrum as the active ingredient. It quickly knocks down infestations. Professionals use this because bed bugs have no resistance to this product and there are no residuals. This means that when the oil evaporates, the active ingredients also evaporate. This formula also contains a “flushing agent” that causes bed bugs to leave their hiding places and scatter, which increases the likelihood that they will come in contact with the insecticide. This product can be applied directly to a mattress.
  • JT Eaton Kills Bed Bugs Residual Killer (Water-Based): JT Eaton KILLS BED BUGS II (blue label) is a water-based, ready-to-use bed bug killer with residual ingredients that last up to 16 weeks, making it a perfect complement to JT Eaton KILLS BED BUGS (red label) Contact Killer. With this spray, bed bugs will die within a day since the water base of the insecticide cannot penetrate the waxy surface of the insect’s surface as quickly as the oil in the KILLS BED BUGS (red label). When the water evaporates, there will be a microscopic film of deltamethrin (active ingredient), which will continue to kill bed bugs for up to 16 weeks. This product can be applied directly to a mattress.
  • J.T Eaton Kills Bed Bugs Powder (Diatomaceous Earth): J.T Eaton Kills Bed Bugs Powder is an all natural Diatomaceous Earth powder that is harmless to humans and animals, but effectively kills Bed Bugs. Diatomaceous Earth is composed of small, razor-blade sharp crushed sedimentary rock.  When applied, this powder cuts and is absorbed into the outer layer of Bed Bugs causing them to dehydrate and eventually die. J.T Eaton Kills Bed Bugs Powder can be applied around electrical outlets, in between baseboards or any indoor cracks or crevices, around the perimeter of your bed and even inside walls. This powder should be kept dry and away from moisture in order to maintain its effectiveness.

Bed Bug Stats: What people are (or aren’t) doing to prevent bed bugs

12 Jan

Metropolis, the blog of the Wall Street Journal, just released an article containing a number of startling stats regarding what preventative measures people are taking to avoid bed bugs in their lives. Here’s a snapshot of these (shocking) bed bug stats:

Bed Bug Overview

  • 79% of survey respondents have seen, heard or read about bed bugs in the last few months
  • Residential bed bug complaints in New York City rose nearly 7% in 2010, according to the city’s Department of Housing, Preservation and Development. There were 4,846 bed bug-related violations and 13,472 complaints, up slightly from 4,811 and 12,594 in 2009.

What are people doing to prevent bed bugs?

  • 54% of respondents have not changed their behavior in order to avoid contracting bed bugs
  • 29% of respondents wash newly purchased clothing
  • 27% inspect and wash clothing after returning from a trip
  • 25% check their hotel rooms for bedbugs
  • 16% examine second-hand furniture
  • Only 14% of those surveyed have purchased any bed bug-preventative products

When all else fails, blame the government.

  • 72% of respondents said the federal government wasn’t doing enough to control the issue

And who is most likely to encounter a bed bug problem? According to the WSJ:

“The demographic profile of those most likely to contract bedbugs is “younger, a renter and from an urban environment.” By age, people in the 18-34 category were 28% more likely to have encounters with bedbugs than other groups to have bedbugs, the survey found.”

As you may have read, NYC (and other cities to come) is now imposing a $100 fine on anyone caught leaving their potentially bed bug-infested mattress on the curb without being sealed in a plastic bag.  A reasonable request, placing your mattress in a mattress disposal bag can drastically reduce the spread of bed bugs in your community.  BedBugsy.com is now proud to offer you low-cost mattress disposal and mattress storage bags to help you avoid the new fine, and keep your family and neighbors safe from bed bugs.

These mattress disposal bags, which are available in four standard mattress sizes, will allow you to contain an infestation when moving your mattress to the curb for disposal without any bed bugs or bed bug eggs coming loose during transport.  Simply place the mattress into the bag, and securely seal the open end using duct tape.

4 Jan

Bed bugs are continuing to invade our theaters, hotels, the places we live, and our favorite stores. So it seems that movies are out, travel is out, shopping is out – so what is there left to do these days?

In recent news, there have been reported bed bug sightings in top tier department stores such as Bloomingdales, Bergdorf Goodman, Macy’s and many, many more.  We don’t like to act like alarmists, but shoppers need to seriously exercise caution when bringing new items of clothing back home with them. Bed bugs are sneaky creatures and can hide in just about anything. Simply doing a visual inspection is not enough.
